Good Wine To Save The World

A Spanish vineyard and Dutch biodynamic farmer have created a perfect combination. Derrick Neleman, recently named 'Most Inspiring Entrepreneur of the year' in his home country, fell in love with the vineyards of Spain and in particular, the historical wine region of Valencia. With an aim to produce 'good wine to save the world', we take a look at his range of sustainably produced, vegan / organic-certified wines that have become a Turton Wines shop favourite.

Neleman wines aim to truly reflect their terroir with minimal intervention and a mission to ensure vineyards are not only a non-detriment to local ecosystems, but actually benefit their surroundings. Pesticides and additives are avoided,  vines mingle alongside natural flora, and trees are planted to compensate for the winery CO2 emissions making them carbon proof certified. In fact, a tree is planted for every 175 bottles produced.

The healthy, balanced soils of their sites yields rich biodiversity which in turn yields a richer breeding ground for fuller flavoured grapes. This is why Neleman often allows vines to grow in harmony with other natural flora for mutual benefit. This respect for nature extends to Nelemans' work with people. They work with aspiring and talented young artists, designers and architects to create their labels and packaging, providing worthwhile opportunity and trust.

Their Cava Brut combines Macabeo and Chardonnay made with the traditional method to produce a fruity, floral sparkling wine, typically characteristic of Valencian Cavas. Straw yellow with greenish tones, it displays aromas of white fruits and citrus notes with a buttery elegant pastry background and a round, smooth palate.

The red Garnacha-Marselan (Marselan being a Garnacha/Cabernet Sauvignon hybrid) brings clean violets and cherries on the nose with soft tannins in the mouth. A bright, delicious wine that is powerful in taste and fruitiness.

The Viognier-Verdil shows two brilliantly complementary grapes. The rare Verdil grape was almost lost in Valencia, but has been nurtured and cared for by Neleman. It brings crisp vibrancy to the Viognier, creating  a wine that is  smoky and intense with broad lemon and lime notes.

Traditional native grapes Tempranillo-Monastrell produce a brilliant crimson wine with ruby hues and lots of aromatics of bright red fruits. Touches of floral add complexity with a fleshy, soft and silky palate that shows excellent natural acidity.

Finally, the Muscat-Chardonnay shows true care of grapes. The Chardonnay was picked at an advanced point of maturation and the Muscat in an early state in order to give a subtle touch of flowers, white fruits and peach on the nose alongside a wide mouthfeel. High aromatic intensity, fresh and exciting with a balanced long fruity finish.
